There are times during our working life when it dawns on us that we are no longer happy or fulfilled at work. Firstly, understand that your "job" is not one-dimensional - it is defined not only by function but by application.  Function is defined by the job name or description like a programmer, designer, or writer - which describe the  the duties you perform, the skills for that job, and the responsibilities that go with it.  Application is about the  field or environment where your job is performed.  Which industry?  In the field or at HQ?  You can be a salesperson in an IT field or be a salesperson in a medical field. Since you have realized that you need a career change and you want to know how to make a career transition, you should know which part you don’t want. Is it the industry (application) or the job itself (function), or both?

There are three methods in making a career transition.  Many people choose to change both the job and their field - changing professional career entirely.  This is a big ask in a single step.  The two easier alternatives are changing the function while remaining in the same field, or else change industry with the same job.  

For example, you love selling but you don’t want to sell houses any longer. What you want to sell is clothing apparel, accessories, and the like. The skills you use to sell a house will be the same skills you’ll need to sell clothes. And many employers will accept that argument.

On the other hand, you may love the real estate industry but don’t want to sell houses any longer. If you are computer savvy and have been creating websites as a hobby, why not create a real estate website? You can cater to real estate companies, brokers, or agents. You enjoy your hobby of creating websites while you stay in the real estate industry.   If you are already in the industry you already have specific knowledge that makes it easier for an employer to take a chance on your changing roles.  And don't overlook the option of a function change with your present employer.

Once you've got function and application clear in your mind, it’s easier for you to build a resume slanted to the new job you seek. Learning how to arrange a career transition can be demanding at first.  Any you may even need to make your transition in stages to achieve certain positions.  However, with the right tools and information, you’ll learn how to make a planned career transition very soon.
